Kamonmura es un pueblo japonés envuelto en una etérea niebla nocturna. En las montañas cercanas, donde se celebra la misteriosa ceremonia «Takigi Noh», un gigantesco vertedero de basura se eleva sobre los alrededores. Yu Katayama (Ryusei Yokohama), que ha vivido en Kamonmura desde niño, trabaja en este vertedero, que destaca como un pulgar dolorido sobre el resto de la hermosa aldea. No puede pagar las deudas de su madre y los demás trabajadores del vertedero no le quitan la esperanza. Un día, su amiga de la infancia Misaki regresa de Tokio y la historia da un giro radical.
